Why do you need two dental visits each year? You may not. That answer may surprise you, but like all dental and medical care, the number of times any patient visits the dentist should be based on individual needs. The Dentistry @ 1881 team offers patients the quality oral health care, and that includes developing a regular dental checkup and cleaning routine that ensures optimal oral health and wellbeing.

What the Canadian Dental Association has to Say

The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) recommends that children visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth eruption, or before the first birthday. Thereafter, they recommend visiting every six months. For kids, these frequent visits are necessary as teeth develop, but what about adults? According to the CDA, adults should consult with their dentist to determine the appropriate number of times to visit each year. The goal of regular dental visits is to diagnose and treat any oral health concerns in the earliest stages. Twice a year is a good estimate to ensure patient health, but those with exceptionally good oral health may be successful with just one annual visit. Whereas, patients with gum disease, frequent tooth decay, or genetic predisposition for oral health conditions may benefit from more frequent visits.

What Your Toronto Dentist Says About Regular Visits

Dentistry @ 1881 recommends patients visit our office to establish a plan for maintaining oral health. Dr.Tamo and their dental team take necessary x-rays, conduct an oral examination, professionally clean teeth and gums, and discuss recommended treatment plans. Some of the key factors our team looks for to determine the frequency of dental appointments are:

  • At-home hygiene routine – brushing at least two times each day for two minutes at a time, and flossing at least once a day builds the foundation for outstanding oral health reducing the risk for oral health concerns.
  • Healthy eating and drinking – patients who limit sugary, acidic foods and drinks in their diets are less likely to experience tooth decay and staining.
  • High risk behaviors – patients who smoke, drink alcohol excessively, grind or clench teeth, and those with acid reflux are all at greater risk for a wide variety of oral health concerns and may need to visit the office more frequently.
  • Oral health history – patients with chronic gum disease or frequent tooth decay, should visit the dentist more frequently.
  • Genetic predisposition – patients who have a family history of oral cancer, gum disease, TMJ disorder or other oral health concerns need to visit the dentist at least two times each year.
