Frequently Asked Dentistry Questions

If you have questions about your dental care, then we have answers. Patient education is extremely important here at Dentistry @ 1881, because in our experience, the more a person knows, the healthier they usually are. Read on below to find answers to some of the most common questions we receive every day. If there is something else you’d like to ask, don’t hesitate to give us a call!

How do you sterilize your instruments?

Your health is very important. Our dental office adheres to the standards of cleanliness and sterilization set by the Canadian Dental Association. All of our instruments (including drills and handpieces) are either disposable or heat sterilized in an autoclave after each use. Treatment rooms are also thoroughly disinfected after each patient. In addition, we wash our hands with soap and wear fresh gloves and masks for each patient. Staff and patients wear safety glasses during the procedures.

Are dental X-rays safe?

The world of dental technology is always changing, and it's important to stay ahead of the curve. Our dental office offers modern digital X-ray equipment to help accurately diagnose patients and reduce the amount of radiation each is exposed to. Digital dental X-rays utilize very low doses of radiation. With adequate safety procedures in place, there is very little cause for concern.

Do you accept my Dental insurance?

If you have dental insurance, we will gladly submit your claims electronically for you so that you will receive prompt reimbursement. Payment is due at the time of service.

Which forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, and debit cards. We also offer financing through iFinance Canada.

Do you offer sedation dentistry?

Developing a close relationship with a dentist you trust can relieve most dental anxiety. For many procedures, Dr. Tamo, Dr. Marandi, and Dr. Ash's calming manner and music will enable you to feel comfortable during your appointment. Noise cancelling headphones are available for a nice quiet appointment as well.

For lengthy procedures and for our patients who experience great anxiety, we are happy to provide an oral sedative to help you relax as we complete your dental work. Dr. Tamo, Dr. Marandi, and Dr. Ash can discuss this option with you in greater detail at a consultation.

When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?

You and your child will surely enjoy your visits to our kid-friendly dental office. We usually schedule the first full appointment for our pediatric patients around age three. During the appointment, we will acquaint your child with our dental office and dental instruments. Our gentle approach will help your child develop excellent oral health habits and feel confident about trips to the dentist. Please feel free to schedule your child for an “orientation visit” during your hygiene appointment any time after age one.

Do you accept referrals? New patients?

Of course! Our dental office is devoted to comprehensive dental care that's infused with kindness and integrity, and it's always wonderful to learn that patients have enjoyed our services so much that they've referred family and friends.

We're happy to see new patients at our dental office as well. A referral is the highest compliment we can receive and helps our dental office grow. Your family and friends are always welcome!

What can I do at home to improve the health of my mouth?

If swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath, or persistent decay trouble you, our team of hygienists will assess your diet and oral care habits.

They will design a custom care plan to improve your oral health. You are not entirely healthy until your mouth is healthy. Good oral hygiene is essential to good overall health.

What should I do if I am having a dental emergency?

If you are an existing patient with a dental emergency, please call our dental office for immediate assistance. After hours, the Dental Emergency Service is available at 1650 Yonge St. They can be reached by calling (416) 485-7121.

Children with dental emergencies should be taken to the Hospital for Sick Children’s Emergency Department.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

One Saturday per month from September to April is set aside as “Super Hygiene Day.”

With four hygienists working, we can accommodate the entire family all at once. We do this so that we can help patients who have difficulty attending during our normal business hours. No evening appointments are offered.
