Children’s Dentistry

How We Help
Little Toronto Smiles Shine

Children are always welcome in our dental office! Our younger patients delight in our fun decor and our extensive toy collection, and their parents appreciate our sensitive and thorough care. We start educating our patients about their children’s teeth as soon as they become parents. Parental participation, diet and at-home care are crucial to eliminate decay entirely in the children under our care.

Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Dr. Tamo teaching young patient to brush teeth

Dr. Tamo, Dr. Marandi, and Dr. Ash recommend that your child should start receiving regular checkups and cleanings as soon as their first teeth emerge. Their appointments will initially consist of a gentle exam, and as they grow and develop, so will their care. With every child, our goals are to prevent cavities, guide proper oral development, and ensure they always feel comfortable whenever they come to see us. Of course, we’ll be happy to answer any and all questions you have along the way!

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are an easy and effective way we can protect the most vulnerable areas of a child’s permanent molar teeth from decay. Most children will develop cavities on the chewing surfaces of their back teeth because of their location and rough surfaces that easily trap plaque and tartar. With a sealant, however, we can place a thin layer of composite resin over this portion of the teeth to keep it protected. They only take minutes to apply but can easily last for 10 years or more.

Fluoride Treatments

Regular exposure to fluoride is great for smiles of all ages, but it is especially helpful for children as it can aid in the development of their adult teeth even before they come in. We’ll briefly coat your child’s teeth with a fluoridated varnish, and within a minute or so, this will give them a tremendous boost in cavity protection. This treatment is especially helpful if your child is still learning to brush effectively! Parents should continue to brush their child's teeth until age 8 or 9 when they have sufficient manual dexterity to do it well themselves.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

While preventing cavities is always our top priority, should your child develop one, we can quickly restore it with a tooth-coloured filling. After gently removing any decayed enamel, we can replace it with a composite resin that has been shaded to match the surrounding tooth. This way, the restoration will look just like natural dental structure, blending seamlessly into the smile.

Athletic Mouthguards

Whether your child likes to be on the ice or the field, their teeth are in danger if they aren’t wearing a protective mouthguard every time they play sports. Rather than forcing your child to wear a bulky, one-size-fits-all guard from the store, we can create a custom mouthguard just for them. It will be designed to fit over their unique teeth, meaning it will provide superior comfort and defense against unexpected impacts at the same time. This means your child will be more likely to use it and stay safe so they can stay in the game.
